I grew up fascinated with castles. Whether it was the ones in the Disney movies or the haunted ones in Scooby Doo cartoons it didn’t matter. I loved them all and couldn’t wait to see one in real life. So when we did two castles near Copenhagen (even though they were not the first ones I’ve seen) it was a real treat.
The first one we went to was Fredericksburg built in 1560 by Frederick II. Though much of it was destroyed in 1859 from a fire, the Carlsberg beer mogul J.C. Jacobsen did much to restore it to its original splendor and turn it into a wonderful museum. The gardens were awesome as you can see and we even added another new bird to our life list. The great crested grebe. So cool.
If you’re a Shakespeare fan, the next castle is definitely for you. It is called Kronborg Slot and sits majestically on the eastern coast of Denmark. It was originally built by Erik of Pomerania in the early 15th century and then later remodeled by the Danish kings Frederick II and Christian IV. It was the inspiration for Hamlet’s Castle of Elsinore.
Such a cool castle. It had everything you could want in a castle, narrow staircases, awesome courtyard, huge wooden doors and creepy subterranean passages as well as a tribute to all the famous people who played Hamlet. It was a bit of a rainy, dreary day but that only added to the spooky ambience. At the end we did a quick walk through those underground passages and Jorgen scared Jimmy half to death by jumping out at him from behind a pillar. It was quite entertaining.

The one picture looks like Jimmy has a freakishly large third hand. Alas poor Yorick! Ah Jorgen, a fellow of infinite jest. 🙂

Truly. At least Jimmy took it well. He did scream though.

Did you know that you are descended from Pomerania. Grandma Schroder’s forebears emigrated from Pomerania, Prussia in 1864. They lived in a town called Klaushagen. But there are 3 towns by that name now, so we don’t know which one it was.
