Last Leg of Our Journey

It’s hard to believe we are almost finished with our Denmark travels.  It has been so much fun visiting with our friends, seeing the country, and learning the history of this beautiful country.

Our last couple stops were Odense, the birthplace of Hans Christen Andersen, and Egeskov Slot (which is castle in Danish).  Both are on the island of Funen about 1.5 hrs west of Copenhagen.  While you can take a train fr0m Copenhagen right into Odense, we made the trip by car.  It was a pretty easy ride and we enjoyed the crossing of the Great Belt Bridge which is about 4.2 miles long.

Odense is a great mixture of medieval buildings and modern city.  We had some nice sunny weather when we arrived so we walked the town a bit that afternoon and evening before a nice dinner at a cozy French Brassierie and a relaxing night in our awesome hotel.

The Hans Christian Anderson museum was very nice.  He turned out to be a really interesting guy (who knew?).  Not only did he write children’s fairy tales (like the Princess and the Pea and the Emperor’s New Clothes) he also wrote poetry, plays and travel books.  And he was also a bit eccentric, the best ones always are.  Apparently he was afraid of epidemics like consumption and cholera and for a while as a young man he would sometimes place a note on his bedside table that read “I am apparently dead.”

Egeskov castle was a short drive south of Odense and we were so glad we made it.  The castle has beautiful grounds and besides the museum in the castle there was also a car museum, a motorcycle museum, and Dracula’s Krypt.  Dracula’s Krypt turned out to be a dark room with a dummy in a coffin and a piped in evil laugh when you get close to the casket.  I guess it was for the kids.

So we wrap up our journey with a relaxing day in Copenhagen before travelling home tomorrow.

We will miss Denmark and our friends, but we will get to see this little face when we get home.
